The Brevet de Technicien Supérieur (BTS) in Operational Commercial Management, which replaced the BTS in Business Unit Management (BTS MUC) in 2019, is a two-year vocational diploma, which can be taken as a post-secondary qualification or as part of awork-study course, at a secondary school or a private higher education establishment such as IPAG. How is this course organised? What career openings does it create? Learn all about this BTS specialisation that is attracting more and more students.
BTS in Operational Commercial Management
This course enables students to learn how to build customer loyalty for a company, contribute to its business growth and manage one of its units. To achieve these aims, the two-year BTS in Operational Commercial Management includes the following teaching modules:
In order to build professional experience, all students taking this BTS as a post-secondary qualification must complete an internship lasting 12 to 16 weeks during their course. For those who choose to take this qualification as a work-study course (apprenticeship or professionalisation contract), the pace of learning varies from one establishment to another. Generally speaking, students spend two days at the educational establishment and three days at the company, which is the case at IPAG.
Following their two years of training, holders of a BTS are operational to join an SME, a major retailer, a service provider, an industrial group, a bank, an insurance company, and the list goes on. In short, they can find work in all kinds of business sectors and companies (from small-scale operations to large organisations) and adapt to all their business activities, or almost all.
At the beginning of their working life, BTS holders generally occupy the following positions:
After two years’ experience, they can progress into roles with greater operational responsibility and/or manage a team of three to five people, for example:
The vast majority of holders of this qualification, which is fully in phase with the expectations of the world of work, can be sure to rapidly find a job with good prospects.
The two-year Brevet de Technicien Supérieur (BTS) course (120 ECTS credits) lays a solid foundation for those wishing to continue studying for a degree-level course (Bachelor’s, Professional Bachelor’s, DCG (French accounting and management diploma), etc.).
The Professional Bachelor’s is a short vocational course (12 months). This undergraduate degree-level qualification enables students to specialise, according to their career plan, in the areas of banking, finance, insurance, marketing, communication or human resources, for example.
Many post-secondary business schools today allow holders of a two-year higher education qualification to join a Bachelor’s course directly in the third year thanks to “parallel admission” procedures. For example, at IPAG Business School, students on the BTS in Operational Commercial Management course are able to access Bachelor’s degrees in International Trade, Luxury Management, Digital Marketing and Communication, Finance and Accounting, and more.
For those who want to work with numbers, a BTS in Operational Commercial Management opens the door to the three-year Diplôme de Comptabilité et de Gestion (DCG – Accounting and Management Diploma), a degree-level qualification. However, unlike holders of a BTS in Accounting and Management, holders of a BTS in Operational Commercial Management do not benefit from credit transfers and must complete all 13 teaching units of the DCG.
As we have seen, if you are particularly interested in business studies, management, negotiation and customer relationships, the BTS in Operational Commercial Management will be an excellent fit. After completing your secondary studies, you can prepare for the BTS in Operational Commercial Management at IPAG, on our campuses in Paris or Nice. This qualification opens the doors to both rapid employment after two years of training and further studies, to specialise and earn a Bachelor’s or even Master’s degree-level qualification.
