Today, many business schools offer one or several MBA programmes in their portfolio. What means “MBA”? What are the different types of MBA? Who should attend this programme? How to be admitted? How does this courseis run? Some essential reminders about this programme…

MBA: Definition

The acronym "MBA" means Master of Business Administration. Graduate diploma of 4-year or 5-year baccalaureate, the MBA is a master in management and business mainly recognised for its international reach.

This professional degree allows students to acquire both general managerial skills but also knowledge in a specific specialisation: human resources management, international business, luxury business, business development, digital marketing, finance company, etc.

The different types of MBA

There are four types of MBA:

  • MBA full time;
  • Specialised MBA;
  • MBA part time;
  • The Executive MBA.

The full-time MBA is the most common initial training: this general degree is obtained after one to two years of full-time studies, consisting of both theoretical courses and practical internships ranging from 4 to 6 months.

Specialised MBAs cover specific areas of activity such as corporate strategy, finance, luxury business, project management, international business and entrepreneurship. These MBAs can be done over one or two years and also include internships.

The part-time programme allows candidates still working to reconcile their professional activity with following a diploma course thanks to the evening classes. The average duration of this type of MBA is 18 months.

The Executive MBA will interest senior executives with 5 to 20 years of corporate experience. This curriculum is generally shorter and allows MBA holders to be assigned new responsibilities or new professional goals.

At IPAG Business School, you can integrate a full-time MBA in the fourth year before choosing a specialised MBA during the fifth year or join the fifth year directly. In this way, you benefit from all the advantages offered by these management programmes.

Who can do a MBA? What are the objectives?

French and international students, executives working in companies... The MBA is aimed at, and may be suitable for, various profiles.

Students of French or foreign nationality can enroll in a MBA, with some conditions, with the aim of acquiring a double competence, specialising in a specific field, giving an international reach to their studies or for a future entrepreneurial project.

A manager, a consultant or a project manager who wants to boost his career can also integrate a MBA programme based on the degree and experience accumulated. The programme allows the validation of professional experience and can allow you to reach a higher level of responsibility within your company, to become a manager of a larger team or to consider a career change.

How to be admitted to a MBA?

Each school has its own admission process that may vary depending on the degree of entry into the MBA.

At IPAG Business School, the MBA admission process is quite selective, it consists of two steps. Firstly, an evaluation of the application file then an interview. This interview, in French or in English depending on the programme chosen, allows candidates to present their professional project and their motivations before an admission panel.

You can integrate the fourth year and complete your studies in two years if you have a 3-year degree level. You can also integrate the fifth year if you have a 4-year degree level or 3-year degree level (Bachelor) with 3 years of professional experience.

About tuition fees, they are different depending on the schools and can sometimes soar. At IPAG, a year in a MBA costs between € 8,000 and 10,000 maximum.

How does MBA programme is run?

The programme flow is very different depending on the type of MBA you are untertaking (specialised MBA, part time, full time, etc.) but to describe only the most common type, here is how, for example, a MBA is run at IPAG.

MBA programme takes place over a period of one to two years full time.

Whether you are on the Paris or Nice campus for your first year of MBA, also named IBMP (International Business and Management Programme), you follow the theoretical courses, in French or English according to your choice, a common core focused on management and sales, communication, negotiation, business strategy, digital transformation and ethics.

In the second year, you can specialise in pursuing your MBA, either in French or in English according to your choice. At the end of this year, you will be able to do an internship of 4 to 6 months in France or abroad if you wish to.
